A better future for all

Many people are longing to go back to normal (meaning the pre-Corona status) as soon as possible. Why do they want that? Simply it is because they perceive that they were better off in the old normal.

That is obviously not the case for people who were not so well off in the old situation. You might think that is a small number of people. That is not the case. But many people look no further than their own (Western, developed) backyard, so they assume that the rest of the world is similar to theirs. Just look at these numbers.

·      900 million people lack access to clean drinking water and sanitation. Waterborne diseases are the number one killer on Earth, claiming 3.4 million lives a year, most of them children.

·      3.4 billion people, nearly half the world, living on less than $5.50 a day. That number has barely declined since 1990.

There is also a growing number of people who see and understand that climate change as well as the increasing automation of jobs will require new approaches to learning, living and working. And of course, how people can earn money to sustain themselves.

This discord is making it difficult to get support and approval for any change. There will always be a group who would disagree with the proposed changes.

I think that we will see both an increase in the use of exponential technologies (like Artificial Intelligence, robots and Internet of Things), replacing jobs, and at the same time a move to go back to the basics, especially towards agriculture. That last move is necessary for financial reasons (loss of income), as well as environmental reasons (e.g. soil is degrading, droughts impact the yield). Individuals and communities will need to sustain themselves by growing their own food, using renewable energies and cleaning water.

We can no longer expect central governments to take care of us all. Especially not in this situation where there are quite different perspectives, opinions and interests.

It is time to take control in our own hands. We can mobilize people in our communities to build a better future for all.
